Medicine Hat developed, as many communities, around the Canadian Pacific Railway when it was established in the 1890's. Within eight years the town of Medicine Hat was incorporated as a city.

"The Hat" was found to be rich in natural resources including clay, natural gas, coal and farmland. The natural gas resource was instrumental in forming early industries which needed a plentiful and economical fuel source to operate businesses and factories. Medalta Potteries (found in the Historic Clay District) was a world-famous producer of pottery and clay-based products for both decoration and industrial uses.
