An authentic culinary experience.

For the ninth year, Savour the Southeast encouraged local restaurant, cafe and brewery owners to collaborate with their local producers to feed the community fresh, hearty meals. Full of locally-raised cattle, freshly grown vegetables and hand-mixed sauces, the mouth watering flavours were featured on the menu for diners to dig into and enjoy, one bite at a time.

Medicine Hat is home to chefs who’ve worked and owned restaurants around the world. Kim from Takumi Japanese Restaurant has cooked in Korea, San Francisco and Japan. He featured steaming Karaage Ramen, topped with Japanese style fried chicken sourced from Reg’s Homestyle Meats and Deli.

Takumi's menu specializes in Japanese cuisine, sushi, ramen, donburi (Japanese for rice bowl meals), sashimi, nigiri and much more. Takumi Japanese Restaurant is located on the north side of the city at 23 8 Street N.W.

“Our local community is filled with people who have warm hearts, and being able to communicate with them through food as a chef is something I’m very grateful for. Being a part of Savour the Southeast was interesting and thrilling, because I wanted to do my best as a chef and make a special dish with ingredients produced and distributed in this area,” he says, adding that next year he’s excited to make another dish with even more of a variety of local ingredients.

Sourav Saha from Rosewood Bistro has cooked in India, Lake Louise in Banff National Park and owned two restaurants in Toronto. His restaurant featured an Italian sausage pizza and a premium steak dinner with the meat sourced from Douglas Meats.

There were 16 locally-owned participating restaurants that collaborated with over eight producers to piece together ingredients the community could try for two weeks, like The Copper Leaf Cafe’s pulled brisket panini with hickory smoked BBQ sauce from Deerview Meats, and for those who wanted to add a little extra spice, horseradish aioli and red radish sprouts from Mammoth Micros.

The Copper Leaf Cafe is Medicine Hat’s first grazing box cafe and business and specializes in high-quality charcuterie boards. The newly opened cafe is located inside the historic Gaslight Plaza in downtown Medicine Hat at 579 3 Street S.E.

Medicine Hat’s three breweries added to the immense range of dishes to experience, all inside historical buildings with authentic brick walls, compelling character and refreshing beer. Travois Ale Works offered a brisket sandwich with pulled pork, Hell’s Basement had pretzels with beer cheese dip and Medicine Hat Brewing Company cooked up bratwurst sausage with mashed potatoes and braised red cabbage.

Medicine Hat Brewing Company originally opened in 1912, but was forced to close when the Temperance Movement picked up. Over 100 years later, the Medicine Hat Brewing Company name has been dusted off to once again serve timeless craft beer with a full menu. Medicine Hat Brewing Company is located at 1366 Brier Park Drive N.W.

From Fatuma’s Ethiopian Cafe to Zucchini Blossom Market and Cafe, each eatery had its own style and creativity put into the carefully made recipes. And, it showed since community members were eager to celebrate another year of Savour the Southeast and taste the newest creations by their local chefs.

Izote Latin Cocina is a family-owned business that specializes in Salvadoran cuisine. The Marroquin family works together to create authentic, home-made recipes, like popusa’s, tacos, chili and more, using fresh ingredients and is served in their cozy cocina.. Izote Latin Cocina is located in downtown Medicine Hat at 650 3 Street S.E.

Cafe Verve is a locally owned cafe that has freshly made baking, soups and sandwiches and steaming coffee and tea. They have options available for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian allergies and preferences. Cafe Verve is located at 1775 Dunmore Road S.E.

*Accommodations were made when chefs put together their ingredients; some participants cooked-up gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes for more people to experience and indulge in.
